World Container Index Update

The latest Drewry World Container Index (WCI) decreased by 5% to US$3010 per 40-foot container this week, however is 112% higher than average 2019 (pre-pandemic) rates of US$1420.

The average composite index for the year to date is US$3453 per 40-foot container, which is $752 higher than the 10-year average rate of $2701.

The following trade routes experienced decreases: Shanghai-Rotterdam (-8%), Rotterdam- Shanghai (-2%), Shanghai-Genoa (-8%), Shanghai-Los Angeles (-4%), Los Angeles-Shanghai and Shanghai-New York (both -1%).

Conversely, the following routes experienced increases of 2%: Rotterdam- New York and New York-Rotterdam.

A continuing decrease in spot freight rates from China is anticipated in the coming weeks.
