26 Oct The State of Ports Across Australia
At a recent industry conference the subject of productivity and competition was at the forefront of discussions from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) and the Productivity Commission.
Whilst the ACCC acknowledged the degree of disruption experienced throughout the pandemic, concern was expressed about the continued congestion across freight supply chains as well as the lack of improvement with regards to reliable shipping schedules.
However, the ACCC did recognise that a positive trend of the past decade has been increased competition between stevedores, indicating that the entry of companies such as Hutchison and VICT into ports across Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne have delivered positive outcomes including stronger competition for shipping lines, lower quayside prices and increased investment in equipment and infrastructure.
