26 Jul Industrial action continues across Canadian ports
The container shipping industry and wider business landscape in Western Canada is bracing for the possibility of an extended strike across ports after the industrial action, which commenced on Saturday morning, continues, as an agreement remains elusive.
The International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) representing over 7,000+ dockworkers went on strike Saturday morning after federal-mediated negotiations around the issues of contracting out, port automation and cost of living failed.
The strike impacts activities at the Port of Vancouver and Port of Prince Rupert, which see a quarter of Canada’s total traded goods flow through them, potentially resulting in disrupted trade and increased inflationary pressures to the economy of Canada as well as flow on effects such as disruption to worldwide shipping.
