GLOBAL AIR FREIGHT UPDATE

GLOBAL AIR FREIGHT UPDATE

Limited capacity, strong demand and a growing number of COVID-19 outbreaks sees the 2021 peak air freight season mirror the less than optimal situation also being experienced by the global ocean freight sector.

The rising number of COVID-19 outbreaks across Asian and European nations, as well as North America, is impacting supply chain operations across the board.

In addition, the shift from ocean to air freight is adding continuous pressure on the already congested market situation, as shippers attempt to mitigate the impact on the ocean freight industry by switching transport modes.

Compounding this congestion is the deteriorating ground handling situation, as major air cargo flights arrive and depart from major airports, which is leading to a shortage or delays with regards to trucking services, ground handling operations and turnaround times, as well as schedule integrity from key airlines.

In a move that aims to better manage the months ahead, major airfreight freighter operators are performing key maintenance checks to ensure aircrafts are available throughout the upcoming period of ongoing disruption amidst the rising demand of the peak trade season.
