Cyclone Gabrielle Leaves Lasting Legacy Impact on Supply Chains

In February 2023 Cyclone Gabrielle left a trail of destruction across New Zealand (NZ). Given NZ is a predominantly agriculturally driven economy; the damaged infrastructure and disrupted transportation networks are expected to have a significant impact on the nation’s supply chains.

Reports indicate that the cyclone has in effect, caused a “horticulture apocalypse” in Hawke’s Bay, Gisborne and Northland, regions which form a substantial part of the nation’s food produce sector, with production of kiwifruit, potatoes and apples among the affected crops.

The aftermath of the cyclone has left many communities struggling to rebuild, and as a result, experts are anticipating that the already-stretched supply chain could face further pressure amidst these challenges.
