World Container Index Update: June 2025

The latest Drewry World Container Index (WCI) Index decreased 7% to US$3279 per 40-foot container this week. It is a sign that the recent surge in imports to the US, which occurred after the temporary halt of higher US tariffs, will fail to have the lasting impact initially expected.

The following trade routes experienced increases: Shanghai-Rotterdam (12%), Rotterdam-Shanghai (1%), Shanghai-Genoa (1%) and New York-Rotterdam (2%).

Conversely, the following trade routes experienced decreases: Shanghai-Los Angeles (-20%) and Shanghai-New York (-10%).

Meanwhile, rates from Rotterdam-New York and Los Angeles-Shanghai remained stable.

It is uncertain which direction rates will flow in the coming weeks as the rate of change will be determined by both the outcome of legal challenges to Trump’s tariffs as well as capacity changes related to the introduction of the US penalties on Chinese ships, which are uncertain at this point in time.
