Wine Is Still The Winning EU Alcohol Export

The European Union (EU) exported $52billion (AUD) worth of alcoholic drinks to non-EU countries, with wine constituting the lion’s share, constituting a 56.2% share of this total, followed by spirits/liqueurs with 29.7% and beer at 11.5%.

France was the biggest exporter, responsible for a massive 40.6% of the exports, followed by Italy (20.2%), Spain (8.3%), while the Netherlands sat in fourth (7.6%) with Heineken being their dominant alcoholic export.

The biggest export destinations were the USA (29.8%), the UK (16.5%), China (5.3%), Canada (5.2%) and Switzerland (4.7%).

Whilst these positive numbers reflect the strength of this EU alcohol export market there are some concerns around the future flow of these exports as the $52billion incorporated a proactive export boost in late 2024 aimed to stockpile exports in the USA in the event of a Trump administration and potential tariffs.

Given this has eventuated, the EU is continuing negotiations with the Trump administration, and simultaneously exploring new markets such as the South American trade-bloc and the negotiation of EU-India agreement.
