US-Canada Alcohol Beverage Industry Continues To Struggle

The ongoing US-Canada tariff battle continues to impact the wine and spirits sector across both sides of the border.

Whilst Canada may be a small market compared to the US, with just 41 million residents compared to the U.S.’s 340 million, their decision to remove all American alcohol from their market has had a significant impact.

Pre-tariffs, Ontario purchased almost $1 billion of American alcohol every year, and Canada was the largest buyer of California and Washington wine, importing up to 35% of U.S. wine exports.

However, 2025 saw exports of American spirits to Canada drop 85% with less than $10 million worth of product being sold to Canada, and U.S. wine exports to Canada decreased by 94%, resulting in a loss of an estimated $196million from March to October 2025 alone.

However, the impact of this trade battle reverberates beyond just financial losses as U.S. producers reportedly struggle to find other markets to move their Canadian allocations to due to limited resources and trade barriers.

Furthermore, with regards to Canada, sentiment shows that even if tariffs were removed, the Canadian market would remain resistant to recommencing U.S. imports amidst the current volatile trading environment as trade policies could quickly shift again.

This concern indicates the tangible possibility that the U.S. may have lost its largest export market for at least three years, which has the potential to subsequently result in years of brand and relationship fallout due to negative Canadian consumer sentiment against American products.

From a more positive perspective, the current trade situation is proving opportunistic not only for Canadian producers as demand for their wine and other alcohol products has increased by 20%, but also for international producers who are seeking to invest in and enter into the Canadian market space that is now available due to the exit of U.S. products
