15 Aug Port of Oakland Volume Reaches and Reverses
Container volume at the Port of Oakland was up 6.3% year over year by the end of the first quarter of 2025, however the second quarter has seen a change that may be indicative of a new trend moving forward this year.
Imports from China, traditionally the port’s largest source of inbound cargo, dropped from 34,129 TEUs in March to 30,422 TEUs in May and to 25,587 TEUs by June – a decrease of over 33% from the first quarter’s peak. This decline was a consequence of Trump’s tariff policies as importers were concerned over increased costs and market uncertainty.
Conversely, imports from Vietnam have surged, indicating a potential shift in sourcing strategies, with Vietnam’s TEU volume reaching 9,545 TEUs in June, up from 7,445 TEUs in March.
Looking ahead, it is predicted that the trends established in the second quarter are likely to define the rest of 2025, with the diversification of sourcing anticipated to continue, reflected in growth from countries such as Vietnam, as imports from China are likely to remain subdued if tariffs continue.
