Mackay To Welcome Container Trade

Mackay To Welcome Container Trade

Construction has commenced on a multi-million-dollar container depot at the Port of Mackay, Queensland, which is set to strengthen regional supply chain resilience, improve turnaround times and reduce logistics costs for regional exporters and importers.

The 1.3-hectare facility will be the first of its kind in the region and enable regular containerised imports and exports directly through Mackay.

With market studies indicating strong demand in the region for the depot and a steady build-up of trade in the coming years to around 7,000 Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEU) a year through Mackay, the container depot is being developed with the objective of handling current demand and future expansion. It will include elements such as reefer capacity, efficient empty container management and be built for heavy-duty performance.

Mackay’s proximity to major mining and agricultural hubs means these industries, as well as other local businesses, will be able to leverage this logistics network and avoid routing freight through ports such as Brisbane, helping to save time and reduce costs, as well as create local employment opportunities.

Further benefits include less heavy vehicle traffic on the Bruce Highway, delivering safer roads and reduced transport emissions.
