Global Wine Consumption At Lowest Level in 6 Decades

The year 2024 saw global wine consumption hit its lowest consumption level in 60 years, since 1961. This decline can be attributed to numerous economic and geopolitical factors, such as inflation and global uncertainty, as well as an evolving market shaped by changing lifestyle preferences, shifting social habits and generational changes in consumer behaviour.

Although consumption levels are down, across 195 countries, wine has never been so widely consumed worldwide. This, in conjunction with the fact that the global vineyard area also contracted in 2024 to 7.1 million hectares indicates the need for the global wine sector to develop solutions that dually target climate change and make wine synonymous with sustainability, whilst also exploring new markets to lead the wine sector into the future.
