22 Oct Australia-India Organic Trade Arrangement To Bring Increased Trade To Fruition
Australia’s organic farmers and food producers are set to gain unprecedented access to one of the world’s fastest-growing food markets following a landmark agreement between Australia and India.
The Mutual Recognition Arrangement (MRA) on organics equivalence ensures that both countries will now recognise each other’s organic certification systems for a defined range of products including organic wine, unprocessed plant products and processed foods composed of one or more ingredients of plant origin.
For Australian exporters, this means that products certified under the National Standard for Organic and Biodynamic Produce can be marketed as organic in India with no additional certification required.
This arrangement presents a significant opportunity for Australian producers looking to expand into India which is one of the world’s fastest-growing markets that includes an organic market that was valued at nearly $2.9 billion in 2024 and is expected to grow by approximately 20% a year to reach $16.5 billion by 2033.
The two nations have also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Food Safety, enabling further collaboration on issues such as food regulation, international food standards and emerging food safety issues.
