As Demand Declines Across US West Coast, A Summer Surge Is Anticipated

The month of May saw an 8.2% and 5% decline in cargo at the Port of Long Beach and Port of Los Angeles respectively as tariffs continue to impact global trade flows.

Imports fell 13.4% to 299,116 TEUs, while exports decreased 18.6% to 82,149 TEUs at Long Beach, whilst at Los Angeles imports dropped 9% and exports fell 5% compared to the previous year, representing their lowest monthly cargo output in over two years.

However despite these decreases, optimism remains in anticipation of a near-term rebound as the peak shipping season commences at the end of June as retailers import back-to-school supplies and start preparations for the winter holidays.
