31 Mar World Container Index Update: March 2026
The latest Drewry World Container Index (WCI) Index increased 8% to $2,123 per 40ft container this week. This was primarily due to a sharp rise in rates on the Asia-Europe route, alongside gains on the Transpacific route.
The following trade routes experienced increases: Shanghai-Rotterdam (19%), Shanghai-Genoa (10%), Shanghai-Los Angeles (4%) and Shanghai-New York (3%).
Conversely the following trade routes experienced decreases: Rotterdam-Shanghai (-3%), New York-Rotterdam (-2%) and Rotterdam-New York (-3%).
Meanwhile, Los Angeles-Shanghai remained stable.
With shipping organisations announcing a low level of blank sailings (12 in total) across the Asia-Europe and Transpacific East and West Coast trade routes, alongside the continued Middle East Conflict, it is anticipated that spot rates will increase in the coming weeks.
