New EPR Scheme Impacts UK Businesses

New EPR Scheme Impacts UK Businesses

The new Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) rules have had an unfortunate start, mistakenly charging companies multiple times, leading to industry leaders responding that the system is fundamentally flawed and causing financial strain.

The Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) is working to resolve and prevent any repeat of this issue. Approximately 4400 UK businesses are required to pay this new packaging levy, with 484 businesses affected by the incorrect charges. Under the EPR rules, businesses with an annual turnover of at least £1 million and that supply or import over 25 tonnes of packaging are liable to pay the levy to cover waste collection costs.
