LA Port To Hit New Record High

The Port of Los Angeles looks likely to hit an unprecedented record as they are within reach of a 10 million TEU annual record, a milestone no other port has achieved in the Western Hemisphere.

The busiest U.S. container gateway processed 8,655,489 TEUs in the first 10 months of this year, ahead 2% year-on-year, with 848,431 TEUs processed in October alone.

However, future cargo volumes are expected to soften in December due to earlier frontloading by importers to avoid tariffs and well-stocked retail inventories. In addition, U.S. tariffs and the threat of US port fees on Chinese-made ships have led to a shift in trade flows, resulting in increased container traffic and popularity for Canadian ports like Vancouver (up 6% year on year) and Prince Rupert (up 56% year on year) as alternative gateways.

The remainder of the year will determine whether this historic milestone is achieved  –  we will keep you posted in future editions of this newsletter!
