16 Dec Los Angeles Harbour Bridge Gets Floored
The new year will see the redecking of the Vincent Thomas Bridge commence. With an anticipated project duration of approximately 18 months completion is planned for 2028.
A critical connection in the Los Angeles port complex, the Vincent Thomas Bridge is located at the entry to Los Angeles harbour, and handles 53,000 vehicles a day, including approximately 3,400 heavy-duty trucks.
Redecking the bridge aims to ensure that it is structurally sound and able to support any potential height increase which aims to facilitate the passage of super post-Panamax container ships at a future date.
Increasing the clearance from its current 185FT to 211FT will allow vessels up to 23,000TEU capacity to reach the three landside terminals (Yusen Terminals, TraPac and West Basin); which is a significant enhancement from the current limit of vessels with 15,000 TEUs capacity.
