15 Aug Reefer Fleet Growth Yet To Reflect In Market
Although 93,000 TEUs of reefer equipment has entered the global market in the first quarter of 2025, with the production of refrigerated containers globally at its highest level in at least a decade, the issue of scarcity remains.
Increased maintenance needs, retirement of older equipment, rising market volatility and increased demand on some regional trades remain primary issues with regards to the reefers.
A major factor driving increased maintenance needs is extreme heat and its impact on the supply chain at large for refrigerated products. As maintenance needs are magnified by elevated temperatures, this issue is compounded by the significant portion of ageing reefers that are between 11 and 14 years old and due for withdrawal from service.
In addition, whilst the global reefer market is predicted to grow about 2% annually through to 2029, the lack of predictability around market growth and subsequent demand adds to the difficulty of positioning equipment to meet the shifting demands.
